How to: Tether the Cingular 2125 to Mac OS X via Bluetooth

February 13th, 2006

Cingular 2125The all new Cingular 2125 offers many great advantages, one of which is being able to take advantage of the Cingular high speed EDGE networks. We came across this great how to article with step-by-step instructions on how to tether your 2125 to your MAC via Bluetooth and felt it necessary to share.

The instructions below were tested using an i-mate SP5 smartphone and Mac OS X.4.4. I haven’t tested this on a Windows Mobile 2003 smartphone (i.e., i-mate SP3i), though I’m pretty sure it won’t work.

  • Make sure that when you’re setting up your mobile phone’s Bluetooth capabilities within Mac OS X you check “Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection.” If your phone is already paired and you initially forgot to select this option you can find it at System Preferences | Bluetooth | Devices [choose your device] | Configure.
  • Download Ross Barkman’s IPAQ PDAs modem script.
  • Unpack the archive and place the IPAQ GSM script into /Library/Modem Scripts/
  • Go to System Preferences | Network | Show: [Bluetooth]
  • Click on PPP Options and make sure that “Use TCP header compression” is unchecked. Click OK.
  • Click on Bluetooth Modem and choose the IPAQ GSM script from the drop-down list.
  • Disable both “Enable error correction and compression in modem” and “Wait for dial tone before dialing.”
  • # Click on PPP. T-Mobile users aren’t required to put in a specific username or password, but apparently it breaks if you don’t put something in both fields. If you’re a Cingular subscriber you’ll want to use the following information:
    Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (all caps)
    Password: CINGULAR1 (all caps)
  • Enter *99# as the phone number. (at times *99***1# may work better)
  • Click Dial Now and then click Connect.

Things to keep in mind:

  • This does not use your minutes it will use data
  • With that said get the Unlimited MEdiaNet Plan offered by Cingular, $19.99

[…] Today’s Geek Stack It’ll probably change next week, but… Wireless device of choice is down to either the Moto Razr V3 (docs, Cingular is the only wireless carrier that’s reliable in my neighood), or the new Cingular 2125 Smartphone (docs, Powerbook connectivity). As for the compute engine, its either the cheapo Gateway CX2618, the midrange Lenovo Thinkpad X41, or the high end Toshiba Portege M400 at 2Ghz duo core. The price range for the TPCs goes from $1500 to $3000! Yikes!!! M$’ new toy family, code-named Origami, should be announced next week — anybody crazy enough to test-drive their bleeding edge? No thanks… […]

Wow! It actually worked! I’ve been trying off and on for days to get a bluetooth modem connection with my T-Mobile SDA and my MacBook Pro. The instructions above worked perfectly. One note for other TMO customers: I originally used “guest” “guest” for the username and password. At first it connected, but failed when trying to authenticate the user. I changed to just “g” “g” and it worked fine. From what I understand, TMO doesn’t require these entries, but the modem script does. Entries that are too long must gum up the authentication on the TMO side.

This worked flawlessly with my 3125 and Powerbook running 10.4.8

Well done - thank you very very much!

Just a note… when connecting the 3125 this way. You cannot use the dial up *99***1#, it has to be *99#
